Trump Tells Our Oldest Allies Their Dead Didn't Count
Description
More than 1,100 non-American NATO soldiers died in Afghanistan. Trump's response to that sacrifice: allied troops "stayed a little back, a little off the front lines." A retired Polish special forces commander called it a red line. The mother of an 18-year-old British soldier killed in 2009 called it "deeply disgusting." Never before has a president spent down seventy-five years of alliance trust in a single offhand insult to the families of the dead. NATO's Article 5 has been invoked exactly once in its history — after 9/11, to defend us. Trump just told the nations that answered that call their sacrifice didn't matter.
