ICE Sends Federal Agents to a Polling Place Over an Instagram Post
Description
Two ICE agents tracked down Syracuse poll worker Paigelynne Gonyea while she was on duty at a polling site, over a January Instagram post that named an ICE agent already identified by name in published news reporting. She hadn't broken any law — she'd repeated information a newspaper had already reported and added a caption calling for an indictment. Free speech advocates, including a lawyer from FIRE, called it a textbook case of protected political speech, and a Syracuse University free-speech expert described the visit as "a show of force intended to chill speech." This is federal law enforcement operating as an intimidation squad against ordinary citizens for criticizing the government.
