A $500 Million Ballroom Contract That Skipped Competitive Bidding Entirely
Description
The contract for Trump's East Wing ballroom — worth up to $500 million — was routed through the Executive Residence, an office specifically exempt from the rules that force federal contractors to compete on price. No competing company ever got the chance to underbid it. Trump personally negotiated cost details with the contractor himself. Former federal contracting officials say a project this size should have gone out for competitive bids as a matter of course. There is no independent body positioned to force that after the fact — Congress can ask questions, but the contract stands. This is what happens when a president builds his own exemption into the system and then uses it exactly as designed.
