- The Trump administration wanted to deflect media attention away from the popular No Kings protests around the world, and though firing guns over a busy highway in California would do it. Some in the Marines apparently told J.D. Vance what he wanted to hear, that there would be no danger, but they were quickly proven wrong. This is what happens in autocracy, people fear to tell their superiors what they don't want to hear because they will get punished; just like Putin's generals told Putin they could easily take Ukraine.
